The Paresh Rawal & Ajay Devgan partnership

Their work runs across 3 decades of Hindi cinema. From Jigar (1992) to Guest Iin London (2017). It started with Jigar (1992).

The shape of the work

The 1990s belonged to Dilwale; the 2010s to Aakrosh (2010). Paresh Rawal acted in every film; Ajay Devgan acted in all of them. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Their first film together, Dilwale (1994), almost didn't happen. Ajay was a newcomer and Paresh was already a respected stage actor. The director, Harry Baweja, had to convince Paresh that this quiet newcomer could hold his own in a comedy.
  • In Golmaal: Fun Unlimited (2006), Paresh played the blind uncle — but the real trick was that Ajay, as the straight man, had to react to Paresh's improvisations without breaking character. Paresh would change his 'blind' timing every take, forcing Ajay to stay razor-sharp.
  • The success of their pairing in Golmaal directly led to the entire Golmaal franchise. Without their back-and-forth as the blind uncle and the conman nephew, there would be no Golmaal Returns, Golmaal 3, or any of the sequels.
  • Off-screen, Paresh was the one who pushed Ajay to take more comedy roles in the early 2000s. Ajay has said in interviews that Paresh told him, 'You're too serious. Comedy will save your career.' It did.
  • Ajay once said about Paresh: 'He doesn't act. He just becomes the character. I learned more from watching him on set than from any acting class.'
  • In Ready (2011), Paresh played the villain and Ajay the hero — but they swapped energy. Paresh deliberately overacted his lines to make Ajay's deadpan reactions funnier. It was a trick they'd perfected since Hulchul (1995).
