• Amrish Puri was the one who suggested Ajay Devgn for the lead in 'Phool Aur Kaante' (1991). The director, Kuku Kohli, had already locked another actor, but Puri insisted after seeing Ajay's screen test. That film launched Ajay's career.
• In 'Diljale' (1996), Puri played the villain and Ajay played the hero. Puri deliberately dialed down his usual loud menace in their scenes together. He told Ajay on set that the hero should never look weak next to the villain — so he made himself smaller to make Ajay look stronger.
• Ajay Devgn called Amrish Puri 'Pitaji' (father) off-screen. Puri treated him like a son — he'd personally check Ajay's dialogue delivery before every take and even scold him if he was late on set. They stayed close until Puri's death in 2005.
• Ajay Devgn once said: 'Amrish Puri was the only actor who could make me nervous. I'd forget my lines just because he was staring at me from across the room.' He said this in a 2019 interview remembering their work together.
• Their only non-commercial film together, 'Thakshak' (1999), was produced by Ajay Devgn's then-girlfriend Kajol. Puri agreed to do it for a fraction of his usual fee because Ajay asked him personally. The film bombed, but it's now a cult favorite for its raw portrayal of Delhi's underworld.
