• Tigmanshu Dhulia didn't want Nawazuddin for Paan Singh Tomar. He thought the actor was too thin and too urban. Nawazuddin auditioned three times, then showed up at Dhulia's office unannounced and recited a monologue from a play. Dhulia gave him the role on the spot.
• On the set of Gangs of Wasseypur Part 2, Dhulia would deliberately not give Nawazuddin the full script for his scenes. He wanted the actor to react in the moment, not pre-plan. Nawazuddin later said that method forced him to find the character's impulsiveness — which became the core of his performance as Faizal.
• The success of Paan Singh Tomar directly led to Nawazuddin being cast in The Lunchbox. Dhulia had recommended him to director Ritesh Batra after seeing his dailies. Without that push, the actor's international breakout might never have happened.
• During the shoot of Manjhi: The Mountain Man, Nawazuddin would call Dhulia every night at 11 PM to discuss the next day's scene. Dhulia never picked up. He'd just text back: 'Trust the rehearsal. Sleep.' Nawazuddin later admitted that silence made him trust his own instincts more.
• Nawazuddin once said about Dhulia: 'He is the only director who can make me act without acting. With him, I don't have to prove anything. I just have to be.'
