The Salman Khan & David Dhawan partnership

From Judwaa (1997) to Partner (2007). It started with Judwaa (1997).

The shape of the work

The 2000s account for 71% of everything they made together. The 1990s belonged to Judwaa; the 2000s to Mujhse Shaadi Karogi. Salman Khan acted in every film; David Dhawan directed all of them. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • David Dhawan didn't want Salman for Judwaa (1997). He thought Salman was too 'urban' for the double-role comedy. Salman convinced him by showing up to a meeting in a lungi and vest, doing the entire script in a rustic accent. Dhawan cast him on the spot.
  • On the sets of Biwi No.1 (1999), Salman would deliberately flub his lines to make David laugh. David would then rewrite the scene around the flub. That's how the 'main toh daku hoon' bit in the climax was born — it was a mistake that became the film's biggest laugh.
  • Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004) directly inspired the Telugu remake 'Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana' (2005), which launched the career of director Prabhu Deva's brother, actor Ravi Teja. Without Salman and David's original, Telugu cinema's 2000s rom-com wave might have looked very different.
  • Salman never called David 'David' on set. He called him 'Boss' — even in front of the crew. David once said in an interview that Salman would walk into his vanity van, sit on the floor, and say, 'Boss, aaj kya comedy karoge?' before every shot.
  • David Dhawan once said: 'Salman is the only actor who can make me laugh even when the camera is not rolling. He doesn't act comedy — he lives it. With him, I don't direct. I just hold the camera and pray I don't miss the moment.'
