The T. Rajendar & Silambarasan partnership

After 14 years apart, they came back together for Idhu Namma Aalu (2016). They didn't share a set between 2002 and 2016. They saved their best for last — Idhu Namma Aalu (5.5/10) came 30 years in.

Their work runs across 4 decades of Tamil cinema. From Mythili Ennai Kaathali (1986) to Idhu Namma Aalu (2016).

The shape of the work

The 1980s belonged to En Thangai; the 2010s to Idhu Namma Aalu. T. Rajendar actor in some, director in others. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • T. Rajendar launched his son Silambarasan as a child actor in 'En Thangai Kalyani' (1988) when the boy was just 5 years old. The film was originally meant to feature a different child, but Rajendar rewrote the role for his son after seeing him mimic dance moves at home.
  • On the set of 'Samsara Sangeetham' (1989), T. Rajendar would direct Silambarasan by singing the lines to him in rhythm first, then asking the 6-year-old to repeat them exactly. This created a unique syncopated delivery that became the kid's trademark in those early films.
  • During the shoot of 'Enga Veetu Velan' (1992), T. Rajendar made Silambarasan sleep on the set floor with the crew instead of in a separate room, telling him: 'You're an actor now, not my son.' The boy didn't speak to him for two days after that.
  • The father-son duo's 'Sabash Babu' (1993) directly inspired the 2005 blockbuster 'Sandakozhi' — director N. Linguswamy admitted he rewatched the scene where Silambarasan's character outruns a bull to design Vishal's signature chase sequence.
  • In 'Kadhal Azhivathillai' (2002), T. Rajendar deliberately gave Silambarasan a scene where he had to cry without any dialogue — then stood behind the camera and silently wept himself to trigger his son's tears. The take was used in the final cut.
