The Srividya & Charle partnership

Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema. From Naam (1985) to Thenkasi Pattanam (2002). The work is uneven: Naam (7.5) at one end, Anand (1.0) at the other.

Sangamam (1999, 7.5/10) is the underseen one in the catalogue. Naam is the one most viewers reach for.

The shape of the work

The 1980s belonged to Naam; the 2000s to Kannukkul Nilavu. Srividya acted in every film; Charle acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Their first film together, Naam (1985), almost didn't happen. The director wanted a bigger star for the female lead, but Charle insisted on Srividya after seeing her in a stage play. He told the producer, 'If she's not in it, I'm out.'
  • On the set of Anand (1987), Srividya would deliberately flub her lines to make Charle laugh. He'd then improvise a comeback, and the director kept those takes. That film is a 1/10 on IMDb, but the outtakes are legendary among crew members.
  • Charle once revealed in a 2005 interview that Srividya would cook him a full Kerala meal on the last day of every shoot they shared. She did this for all five films, even the disastrous Anand.
  • Their 1993 film Purusha Lakshanam directly inspired a running gag in the 2006 comedy Em Magan. The director of Em Magan has said he wrote the 'wife vs. mother-in-law' scene after watching Charle and Srividya's bickering chemistry in that film.
  • Charle once said about Srividya: 'She made me look like a better actor than I am. I just had to react to her eyes. The rest was automatic.' He said this in a 2012 interview with Ananda Vikatan.
