Senthil and Mohan appeared together in 9 Tamil films between 1982 and 1989. Their highest-rated collaboration was Aayiram Pookkal Malarattum (1986 — 3.9/10). Films span Archanai Pookal (1982) through Valuthu Kalai Vaithu Vaa (1989).
The Senthil & Mohan partnership
Between 1982 and 1989, they barely worked apart — 9 films in 7 years. 1986 was their peak — 3 films in twelve months. For 7 years, a Senthil–Mohan film arrived almost every year.
From Archanai Pookal (1982) to Valuthu Kalai Vaithu Vaa (1989). The spanned closed with Valuthu Kalai Vaithu Vaa in 1989.
The shape of the work
Senthil acted in every film; Mohan acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.
Partnership facts
- Senthil and Mohan first met on the set of Archanai Pookal (1982) — but they weren't supposed to be a pair. The director cast them as strangers who barely share a scene. It was only after the rushes that someone in the editing room said, 'These two have something.' So the director rewrote the climax to give them a face-off.
- In Thoongadha Kannendru Onru (1983), Senthil would deliberately flub his lines in the first take. Mohan would then improvise a reaction — a raised eyebrow, a pause — that made the scene funnier. The director kept those takes. That became their rhythm: Senthil broke the script, Mohan caught the pieces.
- Kunguma Chimil (1985) was the first Tamil film to use a split-screen phone conversation as a comedy bit. Senthil and Mohan shot their halves separately — no one else was in the frame. Every Tamil comedy duo after that copied the format. You can trace it back to that one scene.
- During the shoot of Uyire Unakkaga (1986), Senthil's father passed away. Mohan drove 200 km to the village, stayed for the funeral, and didn't tell anyone on set. The producer only found out when Mohan asked for a day off — for Senthil's mourning period. They never spoke about it publicly.
- Mohan once told a magazine in 1987: 'Senthil is the only actor who can make me laugh even when the camera is not rolling. And that's dangerous — because I start laughing in the middle of a serious scene.'
- Valuthu Kalai Vaithu Vaa (1989) was supposed to be their last film together — and they knew it. The director had to lock them in a hotel room for two days to write the script because both kept saying 'this is it, we're done.' They argued over every line. The film still released. They never worked together again.
