Partnership facts

• Their first film together, Kanni Thaai (1965), was a remake of a Telugu hit. Jayalalitha was just 17 and already a star. V. K. Ramasamy was a veteran character actor. The director paired them because he needed a father-daughter dynamic — and that became their default on-screen relationship for the next 12 years.
• In Kudiyirundha Koyil (1968), V. K. Ramasamy played a strict father opposite Jayalalitha's rebellious daughter. The scene where he slaps her — and she doesn't flinch — was shot in one take. Ramasamy later told the crew he held back because he couldn't bring himself to actually hit her. Jayalalitha insisted he do it for real. They reshot it, and that version made the final cut.
• Pattikada Pattanama (1972) was a massive hit that directly inspired the 1975 Hindi film Chhoti Si Mulaqat. The original Tamil version's success was largely credited to the father-daughter tension between Ramasamy and Jayalalitha — a template that later Tamil films like Samsaram Adhu Minsaram (1986) copied.
• On the sets of Annaiyum Pithavum (1969), Jayalalitha would call V. K. Ramasamy 'Appa' (father) even when the cameras weren't rolling. He, in turn, would bring her homemade snacks because he noticed she skipped meals during long shoots. This ritual continued through all their films together.
• Jayalalitha once said in a 1972 interview: 'V. K. Ramasamy sir is the only co-star who can make me cry on set without a single dialogue. He just looks at me, and I remember my own father.'
• In Raman Thediya Seethai (1972), Ramasamy played a blind man. Jayalalitha had to guide him through every scene physically — holding his arm, turning his body, whispering cues. She later said that film taught her how to act with her hands, because Ramasamy's performance was so internal that she had to compensate with physicality.
