• Shabana Azmi personally recommended Pankaj Kapur to director Mrinal Sen for 'Khandhar' (1984). She had seen him in a theater production and told Sen he was the only actor who could play the brooding, silent Subhash.
• In 'Susman' (1987), Shabana and Pankaj shot a 12-minute single-take argument scene in a moving bullock cart. Pankaj kept breaking character to check if the cart was tilting; Shabana held the scene together by feeding him his cues in character, in Marathi.
• During the shoot of 'Ek Aadmi' (1988), Pankaj Kapur would cook dinner for the entire unit every Sunday. Shabana Azmi later said those meals were the only reason she didn't walk off the set of that disastrous film.
