• Manobala was a busy supporting actor when Manivannan cast him as the lead in Thozhar Pandian (1994). That film was Manobala's first real shot at a hero role — and it kickstarted their entire collaboration.
• Manivannan wrote dialogue that let Manobala's deadpan comic timing breathe. In Gangai Karai Paattu (1995), Manobala's reactions to Manivannan's over-the-top lines became the film's most replayed moments.
