Thalapathi is a 1991 Indian Tamil-language gangster drama film written and directed by Mani Ratnam. It stars Rajinikanth, Mammootty, Arvind Swamy, Shobana, Bhanupriya, and Srividya. The story follows Surya, an orphan raised in a slum, who befriends a powerful gangster named Devaraj. Together they fight injustice using violence, while a district collector tries to stop them legally. The film is a contemporary adaptation of the Mahabharata, focusing on the friendship between Karna and Duryodhana. It was the most expensive South Indian film at the time of release. Thalapathi won two Filmfare Awards South and two Cinema Express Awards. The film was released on 5 November 1991 for Diwali.

Storyline
Surya is an orphan raised in a slum who fights for justice. He kills a criminal and is saved by the gangster Devaraj. They become best friends. But a district collector named Arjun wants to bring them down. Surya does not know that Arjun is his half-brother.
