The Anupam Kher & Farida Jalal partnership

Their work runs across 3 decades of Hindi cinema. After 9 years apart, they came back together for Chaar Din Ki Chandni (2012). 2000 was their peak — 4 films in twelve months.

They didn't share a set between 2003 and 2012. For 15 years, a Anupam–Farida film arrived almost every year.

The shape of the work

The 1990s belonged to Saat Rang Ke Sapne; the 2010s to Chaar Din Ki Chandni. Anupam Kher acted in every film; Farida Jalal acted in all of them. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • In Kya Kehna (2000), Anupam Kher played the strict father who disowns his pregnant daughter. Farida Jalal played the mother caught in the middle. Their big scene — where she silently cries while he yells — was shot in one take. Kher later said Jalal's tears made him forget his lines twice.
  • Farida Jalal and Anupam Kher were neighbors in Mumbai's Lokhandwala complex during the early 2000s. They would rehearse their Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke (2000) scenes in each other's living rooms. Jalal once admitted she'd borrow Kher's car when hers broke down — and he'd leave the keys under the mat.
  • Anjaane (2000) was originally offered to a different actor for Kher's role. Kher heard about it through a mutual friend and called the director directly. He said, 'If Farida is in it, I'm in it. We don't even need a script.' The director rewrote the role for him.
  • Chaar Din Ki Chandni (2012) was the last film they made together. It was also the debut of a young actor named Anuj Saxena. Kher and Jalal personally coached him on set between takes. Saxena later said their joint guidance was 'a film school in two people.'
  • Farida Jalal on Anupam Kher, in a 2012 interview: 'He is the only co-star who would call me before every shot and ask, "Bhabhi, kya mood hai?" If I said sad, he'd make his scene sadder. If I said happy, he'd crack a joke. He acted to my mood, not the script.'
