The Vivek & Nizhalgal Ravi partnership

After 9 years apart, they came back together for Margam (2015). 2001 was their peak — 3 films in twelve months. Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema.

They didn't share a set between 2006 and 2015. From Thambi Pondatti (1992) to Margam (2015).

The shape of the work

The 1990s belonged to Kalikaalam; the 2010s to Margam . Vivek acted in every film; Nizhalgal Ravi acted in all of them.

Partnership facts

  • Vivek was still a struggling comedian when Nizhalgal Ravi, already a known face, insisted the director cast him in Thambi Pondatti (1992). Ravi had seen Vivek's stage work and told the team: 'He'll steal every scene I'm in — that's exactly what this film needs.'
  • In Sishya (1997), Ravi played the stern father to Vivek's rebellious son. On set, Ravi would deliberately break character mid-scene to make Vivek laugh — then use that real frustration in the next take. Vivek later said Ravi's unpredictability forced him to stay sharp.
  • After Shahjahan (2001) wrapped, the two didn't speak for nearly a decade. No fight — just drifted apart. Ravi had moved into character roles, Vivek into comedy king status. Margam (2015) was a reunion brokered by a mutual friend who literally locked them in a room until they agreed to work again.
  • The only reason Margam (2015) exists is because Vivek and Ravi pushed the director to write a role for the other. The film's entire emotional core — two estranged brothers reconciling — was lifted directly from their real-life 14-year silence and reunion.
  • Vivek once said in a 2015 interview: 'Ravi anna is the only co-star who can make me nervous. He doesn't act — he just becomes the character. I have to work twice as hard to keep up.'
