• They first shared screen space in 'Mr. Natwarlal' (1979), but the pairing almost didn't happen. Rekha was initially hesitant to sign the film because she felt the script didn't give her enough to do. Amitabh personally convinced her to come on board, promising to ensure her role was beefed up.
• In 'Silsila' (1981), Amitabh and Rekha's real-life tension bled into their performances. He played a man torn between duty and passion; she played the other woman. The scene where she confronts him in the garden — her voice cracking, his eyes refusing to meet hers — was shot in one take because neither could bear to do it again.
