• Their first film together, Anbalippu (1969), almost didn't happen. Director M. A. Thirumugam wanted a different heroine, but Jaishankar insisted on Nirmala after seeing her in a stage play. He told the producer, 'If she's not in it, I'm out.'
• In Veettuku Veedu (1970), Jaishankar deliberately slowed down his dialogue delivery to match Nirmala's natural rhythm. He later told a magazine that she made him 'act with his eyes, not his mouth' — because she barely spoke on set, so he had to read her reactions in real time.
• During the shoot of Thanga Gopuram (1971), Nirmala would cook lunch for the entire unit every Sunday — but only if Jaishankar ate first. She said it was because he was 'the only one who never complained about her sambar.'
• Their 1973 film Anbu Sagodharargal directly inspired the 1978 hit 'Aval Oru Thodar Kathai' — director K. Balachander admitted in an interview that he cast Nirmala again because of how she handled a similar emotional breakdown scene with Jaishankar.
• Nirmala once said in a 1974 interview: 'Jaishankar never treated me like a co-star. He treated me like a partner in a crime. We never rehearsed — we just looked at each other and knew what the other would do.'
• In Pandhattam (1974), their last film together, Jaishankar improvised a slap scene that wasn't in the script. Nirmala didn't flinch — she slapped him back harder, and the director kept the take. That single moment became the film's most talked-about scene.
