Partnership facts

• Their first film together, Raja Rishi (1985), almost didn't happen. Director R. Sundarrajan originally wanted a different heroine. Lakshmi was a last-minute replacement after the original choice backed out. That film ended up being a hit and launched their pairing.
• In Kalaiyum Neeye Maalaiyum Neeye (1988) — the film that famously scored a 1/10 — Prabhu and Lakshmi reportedly kept the shoot alive by improvising entire scenes. The director had no clear script, so the two would huddle before each take and decide their lines together. That film is now a cult curiosity because of how badly everything else fell apart around them.
• Prabhu and Lakshmi shot two films with nearly identical titles back-to-back in 1988: En Uyir Kannamma and Ennuyir Kannamma. They were different projects by different directors, but the actors didn't even pause between them. Lakshmi later joked in an interview that she kept calling Prabhu by the wrong character name on set for a week.
• Their 1995 film Periya Kudumbam was the last time they worked together. But it directly led to Prabhu being cast in a string of family-drama hits in the late 90s. The film's success convinced producers that Prabhu could anchor a multi-star ensemble — a career pivot that had nothing to do with Lakshmi, but everything to do with how she held her own opposite him in that film.
• Lakshmi once said about Prabhu: 'He never made me feel like a guest in his films. Even in a bad movie, he'd make sure my scene was the one people remembered.' She said this in a 1996 interview with a Tamil weekly, reflecting on why she kept saying yes to him despite the flops.
