Partnership facts

• Nagarajan cast Padmini in 'Saraswati Sabatham' (1966) only after his first choice, Savitri, turned him down. Padmini stepped in and made the role her own.
• On the set of 'Thillaanaa Mohanambal' (1968), Nagarajan let Padmini choreograph her own dance sequences. She was a trained Bharatanatyam dancer, and he trusted her instincts over his own storyboard.
• The success of 'Thillaanaa Mohanambal' directly inspired a wave of dance-centric Tamil films in the early 70s. Without this pair's collaboration, that mini-genre might never have taken off.
• Nagarajan and Padmini had a standing ritual: before every film's first shot, he would hand her a fresh jasmine garland. She wore it in every opening scene of their six films together.
• Padmini once said in an interview: 'Nagarajan sir never shouted at me. If a scene was wrong, he would just re-draw the shot on paper and show me silently. That made me work twice as hard.'
• In 'Vilayattu Pillai' (1970), Nagarajan deliberately wrote a scene where Padmini had to deliver a long monologue in a single take. He knew she could hold the frame without cuts — something he never asked of his other heroines.
