Partnership facts

• They first shared screen space in 'En Magan' (1970), but the pairing almost didn't happen. Director M. A. Thirumugam was initially hesitant to cast Nagesh as the hero opposite Manjula, worried his comic image wouldn't sell romance. Nagesh personally convinced him with a test scene.
• In 'Ulagam Sutrum Valiban' (1973), Nagesh played the straight man to Manjula's comic timing — a rare reversal. She improvised most of her dialogue in the train sequence, and he deliberately slowed his delivery to let her punchlines land. That scene is still a fan favourite.
• Their pairing in 'Maru Piravi' (1973) directly inspired the reincarnation romance trend in Tamil cinema. Two years later, 'Moondru Mudichu' borrowed the same 'past-life lovers' hook — and that film launched Rajinikanth.
• Off-screen, Manjula called Nagesh 'anna' (elder brother) and he treated her like family. On the sets of 'Doctoramma' (1974), he personally taught her the nuances of slapstick timing — something she later said 'no other co-star ever bothered to do'.
• Manjula once said in a 1975 interview: 'Nagesh made me feel like I was the funny one. He'd whisper, 'You take the laugh, I'll set it up.' I owe my comedy career to him.'
