Partnership facts

• Karthik was a newcomer when director R. Sundarrajan cast him in Oomai Vizhigal (1986). Kumarimuthu, already a seasoned comedian, was brought in to support the young lead. That film bombed — but the two hit it off so well on set that Sundarrajan paired them again in Irumbu Pookkal (1991), which became their first real hit.
• In Irumbu Pookkal (1991), Kumarimuthu’s deadpan timing forced Karthik to slow down his natural energy. Karthik later admitted that Kumarimuthu’s pauses made him a better actor — he learned to let silence land instead of rushing his lines.
• Chakravarthy (1995) was the film that launched Karthik as a full-fledged action hero. Kumarimuthu played his sidekick, and their comic-relief track was so popular that it directly inspired a wave of 'hero-comedian buddy films' in late-90s Tamil cinema — most notably the Sarathkumar-Mansoor Ali Khan pairings.
• On the sets of Thotta Chinungi (1995), Karthik and Kumarimuthu shared a room in a small lodge near the shooting spot. Every night, Kumarimuthu would make filter coffee for both of them using a portable stove — a ritual they kept up through all four films.
• Karthik once said in a 1996 interview: 'Kumarimuthu is the only actor who can make me laugh even when the director is yelling at me. He’d whisper a joke between takes, and I’d forget I was in a flop film.'
