The Goundamani & S. S. Chandran partnership
One film towers over the rest: Ninaivu Chinnam at 8.0/10. 1994 was their peak — 3 films in twelve months. For 12 years, a Goundamani–S. film arrived almost every year.
The work is uneven: Ninaivu Chinnam (8.0) at one end, Marudhani (1.0) at the other. From Pakkathu Veetu Roja (1982) to Periya Marudhu (1994).
The shape of the work
The 1980s belonged to Ninaivu Chinnam; the 1990s to Periya Marudhu. Goundamani acted in every film; S. S. Chandran acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.
Partnership facts
- Their first film together, Pakkathu Veetu Roja (1982), almost didn't happen. Director K. Bhagyaraj was casting for a comedy track and initially wanted a different actor for Chandran's role. Goundamani personally insisted that Chandran be brought in, saying their timing would click. Bhagyaraj took the gamble — and the pair became a staple.
- On screen, Goundamani was the loud, fast-talking instigator. Chandran played the slow-burn reactor — the guy who'd stare blankly for two seconds before delivering a deadpan punchline. That rhythm — Goundamani setting the pace, Chandran undercutting it — made their scenes feel like a comedy tennis match.
- Their pairing in Uyirullavarai Usha (1983) directly inspired director S. P. Muthuraman to cast them together again in Priyamudan Prabhu (1984). That film's comedy track became so popular that it spawned a mini-trend: mid-80s Tamil movies started writing double-act comedy roles specifically for a loud-and-quiet duo.
- Off-screen, they barely hung out. Goundamani was famously reserved and would retreat to his van between shots. Chandran was more social. But on set, they had a silent rule: never rehearse the comedy scene together before the take. They wanted the first real exchange to happen in front of the camera — to keep the reactions fresh.
- Goundamani once said about Chandran: 'He is the only actor who can make me laugh even when I am not in the mood to act. I would just look at his face and the dialogue would come out naturally.' He said this in a 1994 interview with a Tamil weekly, after the release of Periya Marudhu.
- Their last film together, Periya Marudhu (1994), was also the only one where they played brothers — not just comic sidekicks. The film's emotional climax, where Chandran's character dies in Goundamani's arms, was the first time either actor had done a straight dramatic scene with the other. It remains a cult moment among fans who grew up on their comedy.
