• They first met on the set of Thazhuvatha Kaigal (1986) because director Manivannan needed a comedian who could match Goundamani's rapid-fire delivery. Charlie was a stage actor with zero film experience — Goundamani saw him rehearse once and told the director, 'This guy gets it. Keep him.'
• In Singaravelan (1992), Goundamani would deliberately speed up his lines mid-scene to throw Charlie off. Charlie learned to counter by inserting a pause or a deadpan stare — that push-and-pull became their signature rhythm. No other comedian could keep up with Goundamani's tempo the way Charlie did.
• Their comedy track in Onna Irukka Kathukkanum (1992) — where Charlie plays a henpecked husband and Goundamani his loudmouth friend — directly inspired the template for the 'comedy couple' in later Tamil films like Friends (1999) and Winner (2003). Directors would tell writers: 'Give me a Goundamani-Charlie dynamic.'
• After Naatupura Paattu (1996) wrapped, Charlie fell into a deep depression over personal losses. Goundamani quietly paid for his medical bills and got him a small role in Thaayin Manikodi (1998) just to keep him working. Charlie later said, 'He didn't tell anyone. That's who he is.'
• Charlie once said in a 2019 interview: 'Goundamani taught me that comedy is not about making people laugh — it's about making them forget their problems for two hours. I never saw anyone do that better than him.'
• Their last film together, Kanne Kalaimaane (2019), almost didn't happen. Charlie was hesitant to act again after a long break. Goundamani called him personally and said, 'One more time. For old times.' They shot their scenes in two days — and the film became a sleeper hit.
