Partnership facts

• Balachander cast Muthuraman in 'Naanal' (1965) after seeing him in a stage play. Muthuraman was so nervous on the first day that Balachander had to shoot his scenes in short bursts to calm him down.
• On the set of 'Bama Vijayam' (1967), Balachander would write dialogues in the morning and hand them to Muthuraman just before the shot. Muthuraman never complained — he said the pressure made him deliver his best comic timing.
• Their film 'Ethir Neechal' (1968) directly inspired the 1970s trend of 'social message comedies' in Tamil cinema. Muthuraman's character — a man who fakes a disability to avoid work — became a template for later satires.
• After 'Punnagai' (1971), Balachander and Muthuraman never worked together again. No public fallout — Balachander just moved on to new actors. Muthuraman later said in a 1980s interview that he still called Balachander 'Sir' whenever they met.
• Muthuraman once said: 'Balachander sir made me act like I was in a play, not a film. He told me, "Don't act for the camera. Act for the last row." That changed everything for me.'
