• Priyadarshan cast Amrish Puri in 'Muskurahat' (1992) after being blown away by his performance in 'Meri Jung' — but Puri almost said no because the role was too small. The director convinced him by promising to expand the part during the shoot.
• On the set of 'Hulchul' (1995), Priyadarshan realized Puri could do comedy better than most comedians. He started writing extra comic beats for Puri on the spot — the scene where Puri's character gets stuck in a window was entirely improvised after Puri suggested it.
• The success of 'Virasat' (1997) directly led to Priyadarshan remaking it in Malayalam as 'Kireedam' — but the Hindi version's emotional weight came from Puri's performance as the father. That role later inspired a whole wave of 'angry father' characters in 2000s Bollywood.
• Priyadarshan and Puri shared a love for chess. During the shooting of 'Muskurahat', they played a game every evening. Puri never let Priyadarshan win — even when the director jokingly begged. 'He said, 'Art is one thing, chess is war',' Priyadarshan later recalled.
• Priyadarshan once said about Puri: 'He could make you cry with one line and laugh with the next. In 'Virasat', he didn't act — he just became the father. I stopped giving him directions after the first week.'
