• They first met on the set of Ragasiyamai (2003) — but not as co-stars. Karunas was a popular comedian by then; Ilavarasu was a theater actor making his film debut. Karunas reportedly told the director, 'This guy has something. Keep him around.' That one line got Ilavarasu his first break in cinema.
• In Thiruvilaiyaadal Aarambam (2006), Karunas played the fast-talking sidekick while Ilavarasu played the slow, deadpan foil. The comedy rhythm worked because Karunas would speed through his lines, and Ilavarasu would deliberately pause an extra beat before reacting — making the punchline land harder. Ilavarasu later said he learned comic timing just by watching Karunas's feet under the table during those scenes.
• Their double-act in Rettaisuzhi (2010) was so popular that the director, S. P. Rajkumar, wrote a spin-off script just for the two of them. It never got made, but the buzz around that project convinced producers to cast them together in Chandamama (2013) — which became the highest-grossing film of their collaboration.
• On every single shoot, Karunas would bring extra idlis from home and share them with Ilavarasu during lunch breaks. Ilavarasu once joked, 'If Karunas doesn't offer me idli, I know the scene is going to be a retake.' It became their unspoken ritual across all six films.
