Partnership facts

• Director A. C. Tirulokchandar cast them together for the first time in Annai Abirami (1972) because he wanted two comedians who could switch between comedy and emotional scenes without missing a beat. Nagesh was already a star; Suruli Rajan was still finding his footing. The director bet that Suruli's raw energy would push Nagesh to work harder — and it worked.
• In Sondham (1973), Nagesh played the straight man to Suruli Rajan's chaotic sidekick. Suruli would improvise long, rambling monologues on set, and Nagesh would react with tiny facial expressions — a raised eyebrow, a slow blink — that made the scene land. The crew called it 'the silent slap' because Nagesh's face did the punchline.
• During the shoot of Dheepam (1977), Nagesh was going through a severe financial crisis. Suruli Rajan quietly paid for his meals and transport for two weeks without telling anyone. Nagesh only found out years later from a production assistant. He never publicly thanked him, but he started calling Suruli 'my younger brother' after that.
• Suruli Rajan once told a magazine: 'Nagesh sir would finish his lines in one take. I needed three or four. He never complained. He just stood there and let me find my rhythm. That's why I never felt small next to him.'
• Their double-act in Anbukku Naan Adimai (1980) was so popular that the film's producer immediately greenlit a spin-off comedy track for them in his next project. That spin-off never happened because Nagesh's health declined, but the template — two comedians with contrasting styles playing off each other — directly influenced the pairing of Goundamani and Senthil in the 1990s.
