Partnership facts

• Nagesh and Ganthimathi first shared screen space in 'Iravum Pagalum' (1965) because director M. A. Thirumugam needed a comic duo who could switch between slapstick and pathos in the same scene. He cast them together after watching their separate stage performances — and realized they had never acted opposite each other before.
• In 'Unnaipol Oruvan' (1965), Nagesh played the fast-talking conman while Ganthimathi played the slow-witted sidekick. The comedy came from Nagesh setting a breakneck pace and Ganthimathi deliberately dragging his responses — a rhythm they perfected over five films.
• On the sets of 'Vani Rani' (1974), Nagesh would rehearse his lines with Ganthimathi in the makeup room every morning. Ganthimathi later said Nagesh never once looked at the script during the shoot — he had memorized both their dialogues.
• Ganthimathi once told a magazine: 'Nagesh would finish his line, then pause exactly one second — he knew I needed that beat to land my punchline. No other actor gave me that space.'
• Their double-act in 'Mangala Vaathiyam' (1979) directly inspired the comic duo format in later Tamil films like 'Thillu Mullu' (1981), where the straight man and the fool traded roles mid-scene — a trick Nagesh and Ganthimathi pioneered together.
• After 'Bhama Rukmani' (1980), they never worked together again. No fight — Ganthimathi simply shifted to character roles, and Nagesh moved into directing. But Ganthimathi kept a framed still from 'Iravum Pagalum' in his living room till his death.
