Partnership facts

• Nagesh was already a star when he agreed to do Neerkumizhi (1965), but he insisted on casting V. Gopalakrishnan — then a little-known assistant director — as the lead. The producer nearly walked out, but Nagesh said he'd only act if Gopalakrishnan directed.
• On the sets of Thunaivan (1969), Nagesh would deliberately flub his lines in the first take just to make Gopalakrishnan laugh. The director would then reset the scene, and Nagesh would deliver a perfect take — it became their unspoken warm-up ritual.
• Vietnam Veedu (1970) was the first Tamil film to use a non-linear flashback structure. Gopalakrishnan wrote it after Nagesh challenged him to 'make a thriller where the audience doesn't know who the hero is until the last reel.'
• After Velli Vizha (1972) wrapped, Nagesh and Gopalakrishnan had a falling out over a script credit dispute. They didn't speak for six months — then reconciled on the sets of Ulagam Sutrum Valiban (1973) without ever discussing the fight.
