• Their first film together, Vettaikkaran (1964), almost didn't happen. Director M. A. Thirumugam wanted a different heroine, but Nagesh insisted on Savitri, saying only she could match his comic timing in the climax scene.
• In Navarathri (1964), Nagesh played nine different roles opposite Savitri. She had to adjust her performance for each version of him — from a drunk to a saint — and she later said he made her work harder than any other co-star because he never repeated a single gesture.
• Thiruvilaiyadal (1965) was the film that made both of them a permanent on-screen pair. After its massive success, producers started writing comic subplots specifically for the two of them together — a trend that lasted through the late 1960s.
• Off-screen, they had a running bet on every film: whoever flubbed a line first had to buy the other a full meal at the canteen. Savitri usually won — she had a photographic memory for dialogue.
• Savitri once told a magazine: 'Nagesh made me laugh so hard during Ayiram Roobai (1964) that the director had to cut the shot. He didn't just act with me — he played with me.'
• In Engal Thai (1973), their last film together, Nagesh deliberately slowed down his usual rapid-fire delivery so Savitri's emotional scenes wouldn't feel rushed. He later said he learned to act with his eyes just by watching her cry on set.
