Partnership facts

• Nagesh was already a comedy star when he signed 'Kungumam' (1963), but Vijayakumari was the bigger name then — she was coming off back-to-back hits. The director A. Kasilingam paired them specifically to balance her dramatic weight with his comic timing. It worked so well that they made two more films in the next three years.
• In 'Pachai Vilakku' (1964), Nagesh played a blind man — a role that could have turned maudlin. Vijayakumari, playing his wife, deliberately underplayed every scene. She later told an interviewer that she knew Nagesh would go big with the physicality, so she stayed quiet and let his performance breathe. That restraint is why the film still holds up.
• They never became close friends off-screen. On the sets of 'Kodi Malar' (1966), Nagesh would crack jokes between takes, but Vijayakumari preferred to stay in character and rehearse alone. They were professional — no fights, no gossip — but they never hung out after pack-up. Their warmth on screen was pure craft.
• Their pairing in 'Sundara Moorthi Nayanar' (1967) — a devotional film — was so unusual that it inspired a mini-trend. For the next two years, at least four Tamil studios tried to replicate the 'comic actor + serious heroine' formula in religious films. None of them worked as well.
• Vijayakumari once said about Nagesh: 'He could make you laugh with just a twitch of his eyebrow. But in our films together, he never once tried to steal a scene from me. He knew when to be loud and when to be still. That is rare.'
• Their last film together, 'Poove Unakkaga' (1996), happened only because the director, Vikraman, begged Vijayakumari to come out of retirement. She agreed on one condition: Nagesh had to play her father. She wanted to act opposite him one last time, but as a senior character. That scene where she touches his feet? That was her idea.
