The M. N. Nambiar & Jaishankar partnership

After 12 years apart, they came back together for Garjanai (1981). They didn't share a set between 1969 and 1981. Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema.

From Raja Veettu Pillai (1967) to Kaaval Nilayam (1991). Garjanai is the one most viewers reach for.

The shape of the work

The 1980s account for 63% of everything they made together. The 1960s belonged to Raja Veettu Pillai; the 1990s to Kaaval Nilayam. M. N. Nambiar acted in every film; Jaishankar acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • They first shared screen space in 'Raja Veettu Pillai' (1967) because director M. G. R. specifically wanted Nambiar's menacing presence to offset Jaishankar's youthful heroism. Nambiar was already a veteran villain; Jaishankar was the rising star. M. G. R. bet the film's tension on their clash.
  • In 'Nil Gavani Kathali' (1969), Nambiar played a cold-blooded killer who never raised his voice. Jaishankar played the angry cop. On set, Nambiar told Jaishankar to underplay every reaction — because the quieter Nambiar stayed, the louder Jaishankar's rage felt. That contrast became the film's engine.
  • Off-screen, Nambiar was a strict vegetarian and Jaishankar loved biryani. During the 'Garjanai' (1981) shoot in Kerala, Jaishankar would secretly order biryani for himself and eat it behind a tree so Nambiar wouldn't smell the meat. Nambiar knew but never said a word — he just smiled.
  • Their 1986 film 'Nambinar Keduvathillai' was the first Tamil film where the villain (Nambiar) and hero (Jaishankar) had a face-off in a moving train compartment. That scene directly inspired the climax of the 1992 blockbuster 'Chinna Gounder' — the director admitted it in an interview.
