The Rajinikanth & Sujatha partnership

One film towers over the rest: Avargal at 8.2/10. Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema. From Avargal (1977) to Uzhaippali (1993).

The unfolded closed with Uzhaippali in 1993. Avargal is the one most viewers reach for.

The shape of the work

The 1970s belonged to Avargal; the 1990s to Uzhaippali. Rajinikanth acted in every film; Sujatha acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Rajinikanth was still a bus-conductor-turned-actor when Sujatha, already a huge star, agreed to play his wife in Avargal (1977). She was the bigger name then — and she insisted on doing the film because she loved the script.
  • In Anbukku Naan Adimai (1980), Sujatha played a blind woman. Rajinikanth deliberately slowed down his usual rapid-fire dialogue delivery in every scene with her — he said later that he wanted her voice to lead the rhythm, not his.
  • On the sets of Iraivan Kodutha Varam (1978), Sujatha would bring homemade snacks for the entire crew. Rajinikanth, who was still struggling financially, later admitted that her quiet generosity kept him going during those early years.
  • Thudikkum Karangal (1983) was the first Tamil film where Rajinikanth played a double role. Sujatha played the mother of one character and the love interest of the other — a bold casting choice that inspired later double-role films like Muthu.
  • Sujatha once said in a 1985 interview: 'Rajini was like a younger brother on set. He never once acted like a star around me — even when he became one.'
  • In Maaveeran (1986), their last film together, Sujatha played Rajinikanth's mother — even though she was only 10 years older than him. She leaned into the age gap without any vanity, and Rajinikanth later said that scene where she slaps him was the most real slap he ever took on screen.
