The Nassar & Kushboo partnership

After 11 years apart, they came back together for Ponnar Shankar (2011). They didn't share a set between 2000 and 2011. Their work runs across 4 decades of Tamil cinema.

From Dharmathin Thalaivan (1988) to Ponnar Shankar (2011). It started with Dharmathin Thalaivan (1988).

The shape of the work

The 1980s belonged to Dharmathin Thalaivan; the 2010s to Ponnar Shankar. Nassar acted in every film; Kushboo acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Nassar and Kushboo first faced each other in Varusham Padhinaaru (1989), but the pairing almost didn't happen — director R. Sundarrajan originally wanted a different heroine. Kushboo pushed for the role after reading the script, and Nassar later said her insistence gave the film its emotional core.
  • In Kolangal (1995), Nassar played a mute man and Kushboo his wife. She did all the talking in their scenes, while he communicated entirely through expressions. Kushboo later said she had to slow her dialogue delivery by half so Nassar could react in real time — they built the rhythm together on set.
  • During the shoot of Sevagan (1992), Kushboo was recovering from a fever and struggled with a long fight sequence. Nassar quietly asked the stunt coordinator to break the scene into shorter takes so she wouldn't collapse. She never forgot that — years later, she called him 'the most considerate co-star I ever had' in a magazine interview.
  • Chinna Chinna Kannilae (2000) was the last film they did together, and it directly launched the career of child actor Master Mahendran — who played their son. Mahendran went on to become a leading Tamil comedian. That film exists only because Nassar and Kushboo agreed to work with a then-unknown kid.
  • Kushboo once said about Nassar: 'He doesn't act — he becomes the character. Standing opposite him, I had to raise my own game every single time.' She said this in a 2001 interview with Ananda Vikatan, reflecting on their six-film run.
