The Nassar & Sonu Sood partnership

Their work runs across 3 decades of Telugu cinema. 2011 was their peak — 3 films in twelve months. For 17 years, a Nassar–Sonu film arrived almost every year.

From Chandramukhi (2005) to Acharya (2022). Athadu is the one most viewers reach for.

The shape of the work

The 2010s account for 67% of everything they made together. The 2000s belonged to Athadu; the 2020s to Acharya. Nassar acted in every film; Sonu Sood acted in all of them. Mostly Telugu, with 5 films in Tamil.

Partnership facts

  • Nassar personally recommended Sonu Sood for the role of the villain in Chandramukhi (2005). The director P. Vasu was initially hesitant because Sonu was relatively unknown in Tamil cinema at the time. Nassar insisted, saying Sonu had the right 'menacing calm' for the part. That film became a blockbuster and launched Sonu's Tamil career.
  • In Dookudu (2011), Nassar and Sonu Sood played father and son. Nassar deliberately slowed down his dialogue delivery in their confrontation scene to let Sonu's rage build naturally. Sonu later said that Nassar's pacing taught him how to 'hold a pause like a weapon' — a technique he used in every villain role after that.
  • On the sets of Aagadu (2014), Nassar noticed Sonu Sood struggling with the Telugu dialogue (the film was shot simultaneously in Telugu and Tamil). Nassar spent every evening after pack-up drilling Sonu on pronunciation. Sonu later said that Nassar's coaching was the only reason his Telugu lines didn't get dubbed over.
  • The success of their father-son dynamic in Dookudu (2011) directly inspired the casting of Nassar and Sonu Sood in the Telugu blockbuster Aagadu (2014). The director wanted to recreate that same emotional weight. It didn't work as well — the film flopped — but the attempt shows how much industry insiders valued their pairing.
  • After Devi 2 (2019) wrapped, Nassar and Sonu Sood stopped working together. No fallout — just schedules never aligned again. But Sonu still calls Nassar every year on Pongal. Nassar once joked that Sonu's call is more reliable than his own son's.
