The Mahesh Babu & Brahmanandam partnership
Their work runs across 3 decades of Telugu cinema. From Yuvaraju (2000) to Guntur Kaaram (2024). Pokiri (2006, 7.5/10) is the underseen one in the catalogue.
Their most recent film, Guntur Kaaram, came out in 2024 — the partnership is still active. Khaleja is the one most viewers reach for.
The shape of the work
The 2000s belonged to Naani; the 2020s to Guntur Kaaram. Mahesh Babu acted in every film; Brahmanandam acted in all of them. Strictly Telugu cinema — they never crossed industries together.
Partnership facts
- Their first film together, Yuvaraju (2000), was a make-or-break moment for Mahesh Babu. He had just delivered two flops and needed a hit. Brahmanandam was already a comedy star. The director, Y. V. S. Chowdary, paired them specifically to give Mahesh a strong comic foil — and it worked, giving Mahesh his first solo success.
- In Dookudu (2011), Brahmanandam’s character was written as a stammering sidekick. But on set, he kept improvising lines that made Mahesh break character and laugh. Mahesh then started feeding him cues mid-scene, turning their exchanges into a ping-pong of ad-libs. The director Srinu Vaitla kept the cameras rolling and used most of those takes.
- The success of Srimanthudu (2015) directly led to Brahmanandam being cast in a rare non-comic role in the same film — as a serious, emotional father figure. That performance opened doors for him to play dramatic parts in later films like A... Aa (2016). Mahesh personally requested director Koratala Siva to give Brahmanandam that role.
- Brahmanandam has said in multiple interviews that Mahesh Babu is the only hero who calls him 'Brahmanandam garu' (with respect) even after 20 years of friendship. On the sets of Guntur Kaaram (2024), Mahesh insisted Brahmanandam sit next to him in the vanity van during breaks — a gesture the comedian later called 'unheard of in this industry.'
- Brahmanandam once said about Mahesh: 'He is the only hero who, after a comedy scene, comes to me and asks, 'Did I do justice to your timing?' That’s rare. Most heroes just want their close-up.'
