• They first met on the sets of Neerottam (1980) because director SP Muthuraman needed a fresh pair of young heroes. Neither was a star yet — Sathyaraj had just 3 films, Vijayakanth had 2. The director literally put them in a room and said 'figure out who plays the lead.' They decided on the spot that Vijayakanth would take the hero role and Sathyaraj would play the villain. That call defined both their careers.
• In Eetti (1985), the two played brothers — but the script had zero dialogue between them for the first 45 minutes. They improvised a silent rivalry using only eye contact and shoulder bumps. The editor later said he had to cut 12 minutes of footage because their unspoken tension was so thick it made the actual fight scenes feel redundant.
• Their 1985 film Raman Sriraman was the first Tamil movie to have a double-hero poster where both actors' faces were exactly the same size. That poster design became the template for every 'equal billing' buddy film in the 90s — including the ones that launched Rajinikanth-Kamal Haasan pairings later.
• During the shoot of Nooravathu Naal (1984), both actors were living in the same lodge room in Kodaikanal because the production budget was so tight. They shared one cot — Sathyaraj slept on the floor for 23 nights because Vijayakanth snored. They never told the director because they didn't want him to feel bad about the budget.
• Sathyaraj once said in a 2017 interview: 'Vijayakanth and I never rehearsed a single scene together. We'd just look at each other and start. If one of us paused, the other would fill the silence. That's why our fights felt real — we were actually surprising each other.'
