• Muthuraman was a struggling assistant director when Vijayakumar spotted him on set and insisted he direct Mayangukiral Oru Madhu (1976). The producer wanted a more established name, but Vijayakumar refused to work with anyone else.
• On Mogam Muppadhu Varusham (1976), Vijayakumar would rewrite his own dialogues the night before shooting. Muthuraman never stopped him — he said Vijayakumar's instinct for colloquial Tamil made the scenes land harder than any script he could write.
• During Oru Oodhappu Kan Simittugiradhu (1976), the two shared a small room in a lodge for three months. They ate from the same mess tin every night and planned their next film on the floor with a pencil stub.
• Vattathukkul Chadhuram (1978) was the first Tamil film to use a single-set, real-time thriller structure. Years later, Kamal Haasan cited it as the direct inspiration for his own single-location film Virumaandi.
• Muthuraman once said: 'Vijayakumar taught me that a director's job is not to control the actor, but to trust him. He made me a better filmmaker in four films than I could have become in forty.'
• In Mayangukiral Oru Madhu (1976), Vijayakumar insisted on shooting a 12-minute single-take emotional scene. Muthuraman was terrified of the technical risk, but Vijayakumar walked him through the blocking step by step. The scene became the film's most talked-about moment.
