• Their first film together, Mogam Muppadhu Varusham (1976), was a bold erotic thriller. Sumithra was already a star. Vijayakumar was a newcomer. She specifically asked the director to cast him after seeing his screen test.
• In Raghupathi Raghavan Rajaram (1977), Vijayakumar played a blind man. Sumithra played his wife. She deliberately slowed her dialogue delivery on set so his blind act felt more natural. He later said that rhythm made the scenes click.
• They never dated or married. But they stayed close friends for 45 years. Sumithra was the one who convinced Vijayakumar to return to acting after his political career flopped in the early 2000s.
• Their 1993 film Maravan was the first Tamil film to be shot entirely in the forests of Kerala. It directly inspired the location scouts for Mani Ratnam's later forest-set sequences in Raavanan.
• Sumithra once told a magazine: 'Vijayakumar is the only co-star who never once made me feel like I was acting. He just listened. That's rare.'
• In Chellakili (1979), they played a couple with a huge age gap — she was older on screen. Sumithra deliberately roughened her voice in scenes to make the power dynamic feel real. Vijayakumar matched her by playing softer, almost shy.
