Partnership facts

• Muthuraman cast Srividya in 'Kalangalil Aval Vasantham' (1976) after seeing her in a Malayalam film. He later said he picked her because she had 'sad eyes that could smile' — exactly what the role needed.
• On the set of 'Katrinile Varum Geetham' (1978), Muthuraman realized Srividya could cry on cue without glycerin. He started writing longer emotional scenes for her, and she would deliver them in one take — saving him hours of shooting time.
• Srividya was the only actress Muthuraman allowed to suggest changes to his script during shooting. For 'Puthukavithai' (1982), she rewrote her own dialogue in two scenes because she felt the Tamil wasn't natural. He kept her version.
• Their 1982 film 'Puthukavithai' directly inspired director Mani Ratnam's early style. Ratnam has said in interviews that the way Muthuraman framed Srividya's face in close-ups — letting silence do the work — taught him how to shoot women in love.
• After 'Manithan' (1987) flopped, Muthuraman called Srividya and apologized — he felt he had given her a weak role. She told him not to worry and offered to work for free on his next film. He never took her up on it, but they stayed friends until her death.
