Partnership facts

• Muthuraman cast Janagaraj in 'Paayum Puli' (1983) after seeing him in a small stage play. Janagaraj was so nervous on the first day that he flubbed every line. Muthuraman told him to just speak like he talks to his friends. That became Janagaraj's entire comic style.
• In 'Uyarndha Ullam' (1985), Muthuraman let Janagaraj improvise most of his dialogue. Janagaraj would write his own lines on the set and run them by Muthuraman. The director only said yes or no. That film's comedy track was entirely Janagaraj's first draft.
• After 'Nallavan' (1988) bombed hard, Janagaraj called Muthuraman and apologized for the film's failure. Muthuraman laughed and said, 'I chose you. I chose the script. You just did your job.' They never discussed the film again. But they still worked together four years later on 'Pandiyan' (1992).
• The success of 'Paayum Puli' (1983) directly led to Janagaraj being cast as the permanent comedian in Rajinikanth's next five films. Muthuraman had recommended him to Rajini after that shoot. Without that one recommendation, Janagaraj's career might have stayed in theatre.
• Janagaraj once said in a 1993 interview: 'Muthuraman sir never shouted at me. Even when I messed up a scene in 'Nallavan', he just said, 'Try again, but faster.' That's why I gave him my best. He made me feel like I was the hero of the comedy track.'
