Partnership facts

• Srividya was the bigger star when they first paired up in Thiramai (1985). Janagaraj was still finding his footing. She personally asked the director to cast him after seeing his stage work — she felt he had a raw energy that would balance her controlled style.
• In Vetri Padigal (1991), Janagaraj improvised a whole comic sequence where he mimics Srividya's signature walk. She didn't know he was going to do it. Her genuine laughter in the scene is real — the director kept it in the final cut.
• On the sets of Thaai Naadu (1989), Janagaraj would bring Srividya filter coffee from a specific shop every morning. She later said it was the only thing that got her through the gruelling 5 AM call sheets. They kept this ritual for all five films.
• Their pairing in Nee Pathi Naan Pathi (1991) directly inspired director K. S. Ravikumar to cast them together again in Jodi (1999). He said he wanted to recreate the 'easy, lived-in vibe' they had — but by then, their offscreen friendship had cooled, and the film flopped.
• Janagaraj once told a magazine: 'Srividya taught me how to react without words. I would just watch her eyes during my lines and adjust my timing. She never told me to do it — I just learned by being next to her.'
• After Jodi (1999) bombed, they never spoke again. No fight — just drifted apart. Srividya moved to Malayalam cinema full-time. Janagaraj later admitted in a rare interview that he still had her number saved but never called.
