The K. Vijayan & Thengai Srinivasan partnership

From Annan Oru Koyil (1977) to Krishnan Vandhan (1987). The played out closed with Krishnan Vandhan in 1987. Thirisoolam is the one most viewers reach for.

It started with Annan Oru Koyil (1977).

The shape of the work

The 1970s belonged to Thirisoolam; the 1980s to Krishnan Vandhan. K. Vijayan directed every film; Thengai Srinivasan acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • They first met on the sets of Rudhra Thaandavam (1978) because director S. A. Chandrasekhar deliberately paired the intense villain Vijayan with the comic relief Thengai Srinivasan to balance the film's dark tone. Vijayan later admitted he was nervous acting opposite a seasoned comedian, but Srinivasan broke the ice by cracking a joke during their first rehearsal.
  • In Auto Raja (1982), Vijayan played a menacing rowdy while Srinivasan played his bumbling sidekick. The trick was that Srinivasan would deliberately flub his lines during rehearsals to make Vijayan laugh, loosening him up before the actual take. Vijayan's stone-faced intensity then made Srinivasan's comedy land harder.
  • After every film wrap, Vijayan would drive Srinivasan to a specific tea stall in Kodambakkam. They'd sit there for an hour, never discussing cinema — just cricket and family. Srinivasan's son later said his father considered those tea sessions the real reward for finishing a film.
  • Their pairing in Thirisoolam (1979) directly inspired director K. Bhagyaraj to cast them together again in his own film Anandha Kanneer (1986). Bhagyaraj said he wrote the character of the blind man specifically for Vijayan after watching how Srinivasan's comic timing made Vijayan's emotional scenes hit harder in their earlier films.
  • Thengai Srinivasan once told a magazine: 'Vijayan would stand like a statue during my comedy scenes. He never cracked a smile. That silence was my biggest applause.' He said this in a 1987 interview with Kumudam magazine, after the release of Krishnan Vandhan.
