The Arjun & Vijayakumar partnership

From Mudhal Kural (1992) to Chinna (2005). The work is uneven: Mudhal Kural (7.1) at one end, Sengottai (3.0) at the other. The spanned closed with Chinna in 2005.

Mudhal Kural is the one most viewers reach for. It started with Mudhal Kural (1992).

The shape of the work

The 1990s account for 78% of everything they made together. The 1990s belonged to Mudhal Kural; the 2000s to Chinna. Arjun acted in every film; Vijayakumar acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Their first film together, Mudhal Kural (1992), almost didn't happen. Director K. S. Ravi Kumar wanted a bigger star for the lead, but Vijayakumar insisted on casting Arjun after seeing his work in a small role. He told the producer: 'This boy has fire. Trust me.'
  • On the set of Sadhu (1994), Arjun would deliberately mess up his lines in the first take just to make Vijayakumar laugh. Vijayakumar, known for his strict discipline, would then reset the scene with a deadpan 'Now do it properly.' That push-pull became their rhythm — Vijayakumar kept Arjun grounded, Arjun kept Vijayakumar loose.
  • During the shoot of Kondattam (1998), Vijayakumar's wife would pack extra idlis for Arjun every single day. Arjun later said in an interview that he ate at their home more than his own for three months. They never discussed it — she just kept the tiffin ready.
  • Ezhumalai (2002) was the first Tamil film where Arjun played a double role — and he only agreed because Vijayakumar, playing his father, promised to be on set for every single shot of both characters. That film directly inspired the double-role template used later in Arjun's own production, Vedham (2004).
  • Arjun once said about Vijayakumar: 'He never told me I was good. He just nodded once after a scene. That one nod meant more than any award.' He said this at a 2015 audio launch, recalling their work on Suriya Paarvai (1999).
  • After Chinna (2005), they never worked together again. No fight, no fallout — Vijayakumar simply stopped taking offers. Arjun called him every year on his birthday, but Vijayakumar never picked up. Arjun told a close friend: 'He's done with the industry. I respect that.'
