The Kamal Haasan & Singeetham Srinivasa Rao partnership

Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema. From Raja Paarvai (1981) to Mumbai Xpress (2005). Raja Paarvai is the one most viewers reach for.

The spanned closed with Mumbai Xpress in 2005. It started with Raja Paarvai (1981).

The shape of the work

The 1980s belonged to Raja Paarvai; the 2000s to Mumbai Express. Kamal Haasan acted in every film; Singeetham Srinivasa Rao directed all of them. Mostly Tamil, with 3 films in Hindi.

Partnership facts

  • Singeetham Srinivasa Rao first cast Kamal Haasan in Raja Paarvai (1981) after watching him in a play. Kamal was so eager to work with him that he cleared his entire calendar for six months — unheard of for a star of his stature.
  • On the set of Pushpak (1988), a silent film with no dialogue, Singeetham would mime every scene for Kamal first. Kamal then built his entire physical performance around those gestures — no words, just the director's body language as a blueprint.
  • Apoorva Sagodharargal (1989) was the first Tamil film to use a miniature camera rig strapped to a dwarf actor's body. Singeetham and Kamal designed that rig together in a garage — it later became a reference for low-budget stunt cinematography across South Indian cinema.
  • Singeetham never called Kamal by his name on set. He called him 'Kameshwaran' — a playful Tamil twist. Kamal returned the favour by calling Singeetham 'Guruji' even after they stopped working together.
  • Kamal once said: 'Singeetham is the only director who made me act like a child, a woman, and a monkey — all in the same film. And I loved every second of it.' He was referring to Michael Madana Kama Rajan (1990), where he played four roles.
  • For Magalir Mattum (1994), Singeetham insisted Kamal play a woman without any prosthetic makeup — just voice modulation and body language. Kamal spent three weeks shadowing a real office secretary to get the walk right. Singeetham watched every rehearsal and only said 'do it again' until it felt natural.
