Partnership facts

• Sripriya was the one who pushed director C. V. Rajendran to cast Kamal Haasan in 'Pattikkaattu Raja' (1975). She had just worked with Kamal in a small role and told the director he was the next big thing. That film became their first together.
• In 'Aval Appadithan' (1978), Sripriya played a woman who rejects marriage and walks out on Kamal's character. She later said Kamal deliberately underplayed his scenes to make her anger land harder. He told her: 'If I shout, the audience will side with me. Stay quiet, let her burn.'
• Their film 'Ilamai Oonjal Aadukirathu' (1978) directly launched the career of director C. V. Sridhar's son — but more importantly, it was the first Tamil film to openly show a college romance with a female lead who had agency. Every coming-of-age romance in the 80s copied its template.
• Sripriya and Kamal never dated, but they had a standing bet on every film set: whoever flubbed a line first had to buy the whole crew ice cream. Kamal lost so often that Sripriya once joked he funded half the unit's summer snacks.
• Sripriya once said in an interview: 'Kamal would rehearse a scene 20 times before the camera rolled. I would walk in cold and just react. He said my spontaneity made him look real. I said his preparation made me look smart.'
• In 'Enakkul Oruvan' (1984), Kamal played a man with multiple personalities. Sripriya played his wife. She had to act opposite three different versions of him in the same scene — and she never broke character. Kamal later told the crew that her steady gaze was his anchor to stay in character.
