• Venniradai Moorthy and Chinni Jayanth first shared screen space in Muthal Vasantham (1986) because the director needed a pair of comedians who could play off each other without stepping on the hero's lines. Moorthy was already a stage veteran; Jayanth was a mimicry artist making his film debut. The director paired them on a hunch after seeing Jayanth imitate Moorthy at a party.
• In Nadigan (1990), Moorthy played the straight man to Jayanth's hyperactive sidekick. Moorthy later said in an interview that Jayanth's timing was so fast he had to deliberately slow his own delivery by half a beat — otherwise the audience couldn't catch the punchline. That rhythm became their signature across all seven films.
• Their double-act in Mallu Vetti Minor (1990) directly inspired the comedy track in the 1995 blockbuster Baashha. Director Suresh Krissna told a fan forum that he rewatched their scenes to study how two comedians could sustain a subplot without the hero for 15 minutes. Rajinikanth himself approved the lift.
• On the sets of Killadi Maappillai (1994), Moorthy and Jayanth shared a single makeup van — not because the production was cheap, but because they insisted. They would rehearse their scenes in the van while the crew set up lights, often rewriting the dialogue on the spot. The director let them because their ad-libs always got better laughs.
• Chinni Jayanth once said: 'Moorthy anna taught me that comedy is not about making people laugh — it's about making them wait for the laugh. I learned that in every single film we did together.' He said this at a 2018 comedy workshop in Chennai.
• In Thaayin Manikodi (1998), Moorthy and Jayanth played a father-son duo — the only time in their seven films where they weren't equals. Moorthy deliberately broke his usual deadpan to let Jayanth dominate every scene. Jayanth later admitted he felt uncomfortable stealing focus from his senior, so he underplayed his reactions. The result was a rare tender comedy track that critics called 'unexpectedly moving'.
