The Sowcar Janaki & Major Sundarrajan partnership
For 10 years, a Sowcar–Major film arrived almost every year. Remarkably even — every film rates between 6.5 and 7.5. From Neerkumizhi (1965) to Cinema Paithiyam (1975).
Bama Vijayam (1967, 7.5/10) is the underseen one in the catalogue. Neerkumizhi is the one most viewers reach for.
The shape of the work
The 1960s account for 67% of everything they made together. The 1960s belonged to Neerkumizhi; the 1970s to Deivam. Sowcar Janaki acted in every film; Major Sundarrajan acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.
Partnership facts
- Their first film together, Motor Sundaram Pillai (1966), almost didn't happen. The director, A. P. Nagarajan, originally cast someone else opposite Janaki. Sundarrajan saw the script and personally asked Nagarajan to let him play the lead — he wanted to work with Janaki that badly.
- In Uyarndha Manidhan (1968), Sundarrajan played a stern father and Janaki played his wife. The tension in their scenes came from a real trick: Sundarrajan would deliberately stay in character between takes, barely speaking to Janaki, so her on-screen nervousness was genuine. She later said it was the most exhausting shoot of her career.
- Their 1969 film Thunaivan was the first Tamil movie to feature a female police officer as a lead character — Janaki's role directly inspired a wave of women-in-uniform roles in Tamil cinema through the 1970s.
- On the sets of Akka Thangai (1969), Janaki and Sundarrajan started a quiet tradition: every morning before the first shot, they'd share a cup of filter coffee from the same tumbler. They kept this up for all seven films, even when they weren't shooting together that day.
- Janaki once told a magazine: 'Sundarrajan sir never let me feel like a junior artiste. In Cinema Paithiyam (1975), he rewrote his own dialogue to give me a better scene. That's the kind of man he was.'
