• Balachander discovered Charlie as a mimicry artist on stage and cast him in 'Poikkal Kudhirai' (1983) without a screen test. Charlie later said he was so nervous on day one that Balachander made the entire crew clap after every take to calm him down.
• On 'Achamillai Achamillai' (1984), Balachander told Charlie to play the villain with zero dialogue for the first 20 minutes — just eyes and body language. Charlie improvised a slow, deliberate walk that became the character's signature. Balachander kept that take in the final cut.
• Their 1986 film 'Punnagai Mannan' launched a young Kamal Haasan as a dancer — but it also gave Charlie his first major comic role opposite a superstar. The film's success directly led to Charlie being cast in 'Sathya' (1988), which made him a household name in comedy.
• Balachander and Charlie had a standing rule: no matter how late the shoot ran, they'd share a cup of filter coffee together before wrapping. Charlie once said that coffee break was where Balachander would quietly rewrite scenes based on what they'd just shot.
• Charlie once told a magazine: 'Balachander sir would give me one line of dialogue and then say, "Now say it in ten different ways." I learned more about acting in those 11 films than in any acting school.'
• For 'Duet' (1994), Balachander deliberately cast Charlie against type as a serious, aging musician. He made Charlie unlearn his comic timing — no winks, no pauses for laughs. Charlie later admitted it was the hardest role of his career, and Balachander reshot the climax three times until Charlie 'forgot he was funny.'
