The Venniradai Moorthy & Rama Narayanan partnership
After 12 years apart, they came back together for Arya Surya (2013). They didn't share a set between 2001 and 2013. Their work runs across 4 decades of Tamil cinema.
From Sivappu Malli (1981) to Arya Surya (2013). It started with Sivappu Malli (1981).
The shape of the work
The 1980s belonged to Sivappu Malli; the 2010s to Arya Surya. Venniradai Moorthy acted in every film; Rama Narayanan directed all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.
Partnership facts
- Rama Narayanan cast Venniradai Moorthy in Sivappu Malli (1981) after seeing him play a small comic role in another film. Moorthy was a stage actor with zero film experience before that. That one film launched his screen career.
- On the sets of Manaivi Oru Mandhiri (1988), Moorthy would rewrite his own lines in the morning and show them to Rama Narayanan. The director would nod and say 'do it your way.' Moorthy’s improvisations became the comic backbone of that film.
- Thangamana Purushan (1989) was the first Tamil film where Moorthy played a full-length comedy role opposite a major star (Sivaji Ganesan). That film directly led to Moorthy being cast in over 200 films as a comedian. Without Rama Narayanan giving him that break, Moorthy’s career looks completely different.
- Rama Narayanan and Moorthy were close friends off-screen. After every film wrap, they would eat together at the same small hotel in Kodambakkam. Moorthy later said Rama Narayanan never once shouted at him on set, even when takes went wrong.
- Moorthy once said in an interview: 'Rama Narayanan sir gave me my first break. I owe him everything. He never treated me like a junior artiste — he treated me like family.'
- In Aadi Velli (1990), Moorthy’s character was written as a straight man. But during rehearsals, Moorthy started adding physical comedy — tripping over a chair, reacting with exaggerated fear. Rama Narayanan saw the rushes and told the writer to expand Moorthy’s role. That film became a comedy hit largely because of those unplanned moments.
