Prabhu and Nizhalgal Ravi appeared together in 10 Tamil films between 1985 and 2011. Their highest-rated collaboration was Chinna Vathiyar (1995 — 7.5/10). Films span Needhiyin Nizhal (1985) through Aadu Puli (2011).
The Prabhu & Nizhalgal Ravi partnership
After 11 years apart, they came back together for Thaamirabharani (2007). They didn't share a set between 1996 and 2007. Their work runs across 4 decades of Tamil cinema.
The work is uneven: Chinna Vathiyar (7.5) at one end, Sivasakthi (1.0) at the other. From Needhiyin Nizhal (1985) to Aadu Puli (2011).
The shape of the work
The 1980s belonged to Chinna Thambi Periya Thambi; the 2010s to Aadu Puli. Prabhu acted in every film; Nizhalgal Ravi acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.
Partnership facts
- They first met on the sets of Needhiyin Nizhal (1985) because the director, R. Krishnamoorthy, needed a fresh pair of antagonists. Neither had worked together before, and both were still finding their footing — Prabhu was just two years into his lead career, and Nizhalgal Ravi was mostly known for villain roles. The director literally introduced them on the first day of shoot and said, 'You two will fight each other on screen for the next 25 years.'
- In Chinna Thambi Periya Thambi (1987), Prabhu played the loud, impulsive younger brother while Nizhalgal Ravi played the calm, scheming elder. The trick was that Ravi deliberately slowed his dialogue delivery to make Prabhu's outbursts land harder. Prabhu later told a fan club that Ravi would whisper his lines on set so that Prabhu had to lean in and react louder — a trick that made their scenes crackle.
- During the shoot of Ratha Dhanam (1988), Prabhu's father (the legendary Sivaji Ganesan) visited the set. Nizhalgal Ravi was so nervous acting in front of his idol that he kept flubbing his lines. Prabhu pulled him aside and said, 'Just pretend he's a random uncle from the canteen.' Ravi later said that moment broke the ice between them for good.
- Nizhalgal Ravi once said in a 2012 interview: 'Prabhu and I never had a single fight in 26 years. We argued on screen, but off screen, we'd just share a cigarette and laugh about the scene we just shot. That's rare in this industry.'
- Their 2011 film Aadu Puli was the last time they acted together. But the real ripple is that the film's villain character — played by a then-unknown Kabali-fame Kabir Singh — was directly recommended by Nizhalgal Ravi to the director. Ravi told the team, 'If you want a guy who can match Prabhu's energy, pick this newcomer.' That newcomer went on to become a major character actor in Tamil cinema.
