Partnership facts

• Their first film together, Urimai Geetham (1988), was a disaster. But director Mani Ratnam saw something in their pairing and immediately cast them both in Agni Nakshatram (1988) — the film that put both of them on the map as a hit duo.
• In Agni Nakshatram, Prabhu played the calm, righteous brother while Karthik played the hot-headed, impulsive one. They built a rhythm where Prabhu would slow down the scene and Karthik would speed it up — that push-pull became their signature.
• Karthik once said in an interview that Prabhu was the only co-star who would call him before every shoot to discuss the scene — not just their lines, but how they'd move, where they'd stand. No other actor did that.
• Their 1999 film Suyamvaram was a disaster at the box office, but it directly inspired the template for multi-star family dramas in the 2000s — where two brothers with contrasting personalities fight and reconcile. You can see its DNA in later hits like Varalaru and Sivaji.
• Karthik once told a magazine: 'Prabhu and I never had a single fight on set. Not one. Even when the film was bad, we never blamed each other. We just said, let's try again.'
• After their 2006 film Kusthi flopped, they didn't work together for four years. Then in 2010, they reunited for Raavanan — but only because director Mani Ratnam personally asked both of them to do it. They said yes without reading the script.
